Liverpool : star and former captain is seriously ill

Liverpool Football Club said that its former captain Alan Hansen is suffering from a serious illness and is receiving treatment in hospital.

The English club expressed its support for the family of the former Scottish international player, aged 68, who retired in 1991 to start a successful career as a television commentator.

Liverpool Football Club said in a statement on Sunday: "The thoughts and support of everyone at Liverpool Football Club are with our legendary former captain Alan Hansen, who is currently suffering from a serious illness and is receiving treatment in hospital."

It added: "The club is currently in contact with Alan's family to offer our support at this difficult time, and our thoughts, wishes and money are with Alan and all the Hansen family."

It continued: "We will provide any further updates as they are received in due course, and we ask that the Hansen family's privacy be respected at this time."

Hansen joined Liverpool from Scottish side Partick Thistle in 1977. The defender won three European Cups, eight league titles, two FA Cups and three League Cups in 620 appearances for Liverpool.
