Dangerous Escalation: Iranian Parliament Approves Closure of Strait of Hormuz Following US Strike

Just hours after the US strike on Iran's three nuclear reactors, Fordow, Isfahan, and Natanz, the Iranian Parliament announced its approval of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

In this context, Iran's Press TV reported on Sunday that the decision to close the Strait of Hormuz is subject to the approval of Iran's Supreme National Security Council. This came after reports indicated that parliament had approved the measure following the US strikes that targeted three Iranian nuclear sites early this morning.

Closing the Strait of Hormuz

The decision to close the strait, through which approximately 20 percent of global oil and gas flows, has not yet been decided.

However, Esmail Kowsari, a deputy and commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, told the Young Journalists Club on Sunday that closing the strait is on the table, and "a decision will be made if necessary."

Withdrawal from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty

Reports indicated that the Iranian parliament will consider withdrawing the country from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) following the US strikes on its nuclear facilities.

Sara Fallahi, a member of parliament and a member of the parliamentary security committee, explained that the potential closure of the Strait of Hormuz will also be on the agenda of a special session of the parliamentary committee.

A specific date for the closure has not yet been set, according to the Iranian Tasnim News Agency, following US aircraft bombing uranium enrichment facilities in Fordow, Isfahan, and Natanz.

The Strait of Hormuz, between Iran and Oman, is approximately 55 kilometers wide and is a major shipping route for global oil exports.
