"As a proud Englishman, it has been an honour to play for and manage England. It has meant everything to me and I have given my all," Southgate said in a statement.

"But the time has come for a change, for a new chapter to begin. The European Championship final in Berlin on Sunday against Spain was my last game as England manager."

Southgate's resignation as England manager came after eight years in the job.
