US Sanctions on Sudan Take Effect for This Reason

The US State Department announced that sanctions on Sudan took effect yesterday, Friday, after accusing the Sudanese army of using chemical weapons in the armed conflict against the Rapid Support Forces.

Sanctions on Sudan Take Effect for This Reason

The US State Department previously stated that it possessed conclusive and credible evidence confirming that the Sudanese government had used deadly chemical and biological weapons against civilians, in flagrant violation of international law.

US Sanctions on Sudan

The sanctions imposed under the Chemical and Biological Weapons Control Act include cutting off aid to Sudan except for urgent humanitarian assistance, immediately halting the sale and financing of US defense services, and prohibiting Sudan from receiving any financial assistance from any US agency, including the Export-Import Bank. The sanctions include a ban on the export of goods and technology related to national security to Sudan.

The US sanctions exclude emergency humanitarian assistance to Sudan and require case-by-case reviews. They also exclude exports to US civil aviation companies and US companies operating in Sudan.

The sanctions remain in effect for one year until further notice. Last month, State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce indicated that the United States had concluded that the Sudanese government had used chemical weapons during 2024 and had notified Congress before the sanctions were approved.

No Comment from the Sudanese Government

There was no comment from the Sudanese government or the military leadership regarding the US move, but Sudan rejected the sanctions when they were announced last month.

The Ministry of Information at the time described the accusations as false and "political blackmail based on no evidence."

She noted that "US interventions lack both moral and legal foundations, and are causing Washington to lose whatever credibility it has left, closing its doors to influence in Sudan due to its unilateral and unjust decisions."
