Manchester United and England legend "Bobby Charlton dies"


English club Manchester United announced the death of club and England national team legend Bobby Charlton, who was considered one of the most important players in the history of the Red Devils, at the age of 86.


The club said, in a statement on its official website, “Manchester United is in a state of mourning after the death of Sir Bobby Charlton, one of the greatest and most famous players in the history of our club.”


The statement added: “Sir Bobby was a hero to millions, not just in Manchester or the UK, but wherever football was played around the world.”


He continued, "He was admired as much for his sportsmanship and integrity as for his outstanding qualities as a footballer. Sir Bobby will always be remembered as one of the giants of the game. The Club's deepest sympathies go out to Sir Bobby's wife, Lady Norma, his daughters and grandchildren."


Sir Bobby, a graduate of Manchester United's youth academy, played 758 games and scored 249 goals during his 17 years as a player at the club, winning the European Cup, three league titles and the FA Cup.


With the England national team, he played 106 international matches, scored 49 goals, and won the 1966 World Cup.
